Thomas Brodie-Sangster (born May 16, 1990), also recognized as Thomas Sangster, is an English actor known for playing Sam in Love Really (2003), Simon in Nanny McPhee (2005), Ferb in Phineas and Ferb ( 2007–2015), Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones (2013–2014), Newt in the Maze Runner film series (2014–2018), and Benny Watts in the Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit (2020). Brodie-Sangster also grew up in Popularity for starring in critically acclaimed cult films such as Death of a Superhero (2011), Bright Star (2009), and Paul McCartney in Nowhere Boy (2009). He also had a cameo as a First Order officer in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), as Whitey Winn in the Netflix miniseries Godless (2017).
Thomas Brodie-Sangster was the first son of the also actors Mark Sangster and Tasha Bertram. He has a younger sister named Ava Sangster, and they are both second cousins of actor Hugh Grant.
Little is known about his childhood, but from a young age, he had shown some interest in the performing arts, partly influenced by his parents’ work and his family in general.

In 2001, at the age of 11, he made his acting debut by appearing in telefilms and short films until 2003 played Sam in the film hit Love Actually. He earned nominations at the Satellite Awards and the Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards. In 2005, he starred in Nanny McPhee with the role of Simon Brown, acting which earned him a Young Artist Awards nomination for Outstanding Young Leading Actor.
The following year, he created with his mother Brodie Films, a production company that sought out new British talent, ranging from screenwriters to actors and directors. Thomas continued to develop minor roles and star in small series until in 2007 he was elected to the voice of Ferb Fletcher in the animated series Phineas and Ferb, which later became a hit.
In 2009, he appeared in Bright Star and Nowhere Boy, playing Samuel Brawne and Paul McCartney, respectively; both performances received favorable comments from critics. Two years later, he voiced the first Phineas and Ferb film, Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension, and appeared in Death of a Superhero, a critically acclaimed Irish film. His other performances this year include an appearance on the British series Lewis and movies Hideaways and Albatross.
In 2013, the actor gave life to the character of Jojen Reed in the television series HBO, Game of Thrones, appearing recurrently between the third and fourth season. Following his departure from the series a year later, he was cast as Newt and was part of the main cast of the film The Maze Runner, a film adaptation of the homonymous novel written by James Dashner.
The film became a gross success. Three hundred forty million US dollars, which is why 20th Century Fox announced a sequel called Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Thomas would play Newt again, and his performance earned him a nomination for the Teen Choice Awards as an actor revelatory film.
In 2017, Thomas would appear for the first time in a Netflix series, Godless, where he played Whitey Winn before becoming Benny Watts, as we said at the beginning, for The Queen’s Gambit. Both series are big hits for the streaming giant, which hopefully promises many more collaborations between the thirty-something Thomas and Netflix.
